With its western border lining the Pacific Ocean in southern Orange County, Newport Beach is just 44 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and 90 miles north of San Diego. The Balboa Peninsula parallels the ocean and protects the harbor with its seven man-made islands. The city then stretches back into Upper Newport Bay which is surrounded by nature preserve.

What to Know Before Moving to Newport Beach
Cost of Living
Probably one of the most important things to know about Newport Beach is that it’s an expensive city. The overall cost of living is three and a half times the national average but housing costs are astronomical at over nine times the national average. You’ll pay more for groceries and transportation – fuel costs are notoriously high in Southern California. Two basic costs that you’ll be able to save on will be health care and utilities. With such a mild climate, you really don’t need to run an air conditioner or heater like you do in many other parts of the country, so utility costs are about 14% lower than the national average.
Climate
Gentle year-round temperatures and plentiful sunshine make Newport Beach a delightful and comfortable city to live in. The only exception is June Gloom, a condition caused when inland temperatures heat up and mix with cool ocean water. The fog often burns off around noon but sometimes can last all day. Some years the fog can be pervasive and start in May for Gray May and last until July for No Sky July. January is the coolest month with average highs of 63 ℉ and lows of 50 ℉. The warmest month is August with average highs of 72 ℉ and lows of 65 ℉. Rain falls mostly in the winter and the yearly total averages only 12 inches.
Things to Do in Newport Beach
Tons of fun things to do are centered around water activities and you have a choice of playing in the harbor or on the ocean. But you don’t necessarily have to be in the water to enjoy Newport Beach. You can take a harbor cruise, go whale watching, and stroll on the Balboa Pier or the Newport Beach Pier. Kayak, stand-up paddleboard, parasail, body surf at the famous Wedge, surf, beachcomb, fish, sail, or plan to take a picnic out on a quiet, electric Duffy Boat. There’s even the Balboa Fun Zone with a waterfront Ferris wheel, arcade, and lots of tasty treats.
Getting Around Newport Beach
It’s a good idea to have a clear picture of the geographical layout of Newport Beach so you’ll understand some of the unique ways to get around. Those who commute commonly drive Highway 55 or Jamboree Road east to Interstate 405 or use Highway 1 to access points up and down the coast. West Balboa Blvd runs along the peninsula for access to the ocean side of the city. But if you’re running errands or heading out for some fun inside the city, walking, cycling, and a ferry boat are the most common ways of getting around.
The only public transport option is bus service via Orange County Transportation Authority and the John Wayne Airport is just over the eastern boundary of Newport Beach.
